Hollow T Classic
Maple Top on Basswood
Sparkle Amber

It was a haunting presence that was keeping Thumper awake nights. Ever since he caught the first glimpse, he dared not sleep. He heard the sound of a wolf howl in the distance. It sent a shiver down his spine. What would become of him? He could not go on like this night after night. He had to break free—but how? He could not merely wish it away for it had become too strong. He could not fight it for it had no physical substance yet he was sure he could hear it wail. No one spoke of the house being haunted but something was going on.

Let’s see? He had to think. It all began after that fateful night. He had logged on to Guitar of the Week for May 6th, 2002 and had seen it—The Classic adorned in that magnificent Metallic Orange color. There was no rest for him now. He was existing in a blissful dream state between aspiration and actualization. But he could not possess it for it belonged to another. Surly this was a testament to the allure and magnitude of Anderson guitars. Yes, he had been stirred, stirred right down to the very core of his being. But he was not satisfied with mere duplication. He wanted to create his own version of what had so deeply moved him. He finally drifted off to sleep with Anderson visions dancing through his head.

He awoke with a start. Amber Sparkle…that was the color for him and adorning a Hollow T Classic would give it a nice twist. He has always personally preferred the sound of a maple/basswood body combination but what if he incorporated a solid rosewood neck—like the ones he had seen adding aggressive low-mid thump to the short scale Cobras. How would that be? A solid rosewood neck on a 25 ½-inch scale had never been done before. Would Tom do it? What would be the sonic ramifications? It was 4:00 AM in the morning. He wondered if it was too early to call. He dialed anyway. It rang. He woke Roy—who always sleeps with his head on the phone just incase there is a sonic emergency brewing.

Bleary eyed, they designed this one-and-only, first-of its-kind Hollow T Classic. But two burning questions still remained: what sonic gift would the all-rosewood neck bestow upon the longer scale and how will Sparkle Amber come across? Everything indicated that all-rosewood could be another smashing success considering the advantage granted to Cobra but this was an entirely different animal—unexplored territory. But as with any true adventurer, there is only one way—total preparation and then step forth into the unknown and go for the top.

It seemed as though it took forever to traverse inspiration to materialization but the day finally arrived and when Charles turned that final screw, Sparkle Amber was born…perhaps in some ways a whole new breed of Anderson. We gathered around. The room was so quiet with anticipation that you could hear a pin drop. Tom strapped on and plugged in. We were prepared to listen carefully and analyze every last nuance of tone. But from the first crushing strum the all-rosewood neck had left its mark and simultaneously erased all doubt that it would be anything but a formidable addition to the Anderson arsenal. In one fell swoop a rumbling low-midrange had been added to the instrument’s normal demeanor yielding more noticeable, yet well mannered, musical muscle for those 25 ½-inch players that can’t seem to get enough. It was big!

Thumper was delighted to see his dream become such a successful reality and wrote to say that he is in love but still not sleeping at night—too busy rockin’.
