Fiesta Red--New

Stepping into the elevator, the doors automatically closed behind us. Tom inserted the special key into the control panel, revealing a concealed second set of buttons. He depressed “A1” and we were on our way down into the secure underground levels of Anderson Guitarworks. Known as the Anderson Command Center, this is where top secret sonic magic happens. The elevator opened. Passing another G-6 clearance level checkpoint, we entered through a set of sound-tight doors—we were in.

With a distinctive click, the studio was bathed in light, disclosing a rather large, warm looking room set up much like a concert hall. Sound deadening materials strategically placed on the wall surfaces create a balanced acoustic ambience. But it is the spots at the far end of the room that illuminate the most impressive feature—the Anderson “Wall of Amps.” It is here that we have at our disposal guitar amplifiers from some of the most impressive builders of all time, and from every era of electronic music.

Today we are thrilled for we have a new arrival. Tom, now days always in search of an extremely low-wattage amp to deliver that big tube sound without blowing the back out of smaller venues or tearing your own ears off with massive stage volumes in larger arenas, got to talking with Steve Carr of Carr Amplifiers. Steve is a really nice and helpful guy who makes several cool amps based on this premise. He recommended we begin our quest with a Mercury.

To our delight it just so happens that Steve and Mike, of Carr Amplifiers, are big Anderson Guitar fans as well and ordered up a set of Classics right away—Ice Blue for Steve and Fiesta Red (the new version) for Mike. It is clear that these guys know how to rock. They both opted for the bolder, more forceful vintage sound attributed to an alder body and the supplemental control given to the outer fringes of the bandwidth, characteristic of a solid maple neck.

Mike stuck close to traditional protocol, choosing for his Fiesta Red beauty a Single Ply White pickguard contrasted by a full complement of our Coffee Dipped, staggered-magnet VA1, VA1R and VA2 pickups. A 5-Way switching system and Push/Pull tone control conveniently and swiftly expresses 7 valuable VA combinations that will easily reign supreme in all single coil circumstances.

While still staying close to perennial roots, Steve opted for a bit more versatility with the addition of an HO1+ humbucker pickup in the bridge position, to lend its controlled, muscular support to the VA1R and VA1 housed under Coffee Dipped neck and middle pickup covers. He further expanded his musical magnitude by opting for the ability to blend shimmering, plugged-in acoustic guitar tones into the mix of Anderson electrics with the addition of visually undetectable piezo saddles sequestered inside the Anderson Vintage Tremolo bridge.

There is no denying the rich tonalities imparted by the Carr Mercury—and without having to reach ear-shattering levels. For those who enjoy a bit more mids, the sweetness of this amp may lie in keeping the tone controls rolled down. Yes, the Mercury will certainly occupy an honored place on the Anderson Amp Wall.

Rumor has it that Carr will be sending along another amp shortly. Their Rambler comes highly touted by many working players, including Mark Goldenberg from Jackson Browne—who also loves Fiesta Red. We can hardly wait for it to arrive—even though it could mean another trip down to level “A1.”

Is this cool…or what?
